The Irish Chartres? Sacred Heart Pilgrimage 2023

On Wednesday the 14th of June, the Sacred Heart Pilgrimage will set off on its 3rd annual three day hike. The pilgrimage, which organisers hope will become the Irish version of the now famous Chartres pilgrimage, has been growing in popularity each year as participants report back with their joyful experiences of the challenging walk. Although the walk is physically exhausting for some, the camaraderie and prayer makes it worth it. Aoife from Dublin, stated that the pilgrimage was “Such a beautiful experience, such camaraderie, such joy”

The primary purpose of the walk is to make reparation to God for the sins of Ireland.

The website promoting it outlines -

This is an 80km, three day, walking pilgrimage of prayer and reparation beginning Wednesday June 14th and ending Friday June 16th, the Feast of the Sacred Heart.

  • It begins 9am Wednesday June 14th from St. Mary of the Rosary Church, Nenagh and ends on Friday June 16th at the Sacred Heart Church in Limerick with Traditional Latin Mass.

  • The pilgrimage involves walking 35km on each of the first two days and 10km on the last day.

  • Most of the route is along the beautiful Lough Derg Way national hiking trail. https://www.sportireland.ie/outdoors/walking/trails/lough-derg-way

  • The pilgrimage will involve two nights camping along the route.

You can sign up for the pilgrimage via - Sacred Heart Pilgrimage

Pray that the pilgrims are blessed with good weather and that Ireland benefits from their efforts.

If previous years are anything to go by, the pilgrims will most likely gain much from the experience. On the Sacred Heart pilgrimage website, Áine from Mayo left a review in which she said " I am still unpacking the fruits of the pilgrimage. I hope the friendships and connections built there will continue to unravel and grow too. We began the walk as strangers, but we parted ways as friends. The Lord was with us and He heard our prayers. It was an absolute miracle that we finished our pilgrimage with the amazing news of Roe v Wade being overturned in the US. All glory be to God! Amen”.
