Many words exist in the English language. Some are class all their own. Considered “profanity”. Others are used as insults. One such word will be the focus of this article.
The word that starts with R. In ages past it was a word that was used by doctors and others to describe someone who has a learning disability or lacked a high level of intelligence. A common medical term with legit purpose. These days it is often used as an insult. Often directed at someone who one disagrees with on any level.
As common of an insult as it is. It has a much more harmful impact on someone who has a disability. As it is often one of the first words we here as we are being mocked, shunned, or overall insulted. Often thrown with a level of venom that belittles us and cuts into our souls. Making us (those with disabilities) feel worthless.
Even with our advanced understanding the world around us. The human need to throw insults is still on going. Using words and language in a way that no one should ever consider. Along with a careless disregard to who might be reading or listening. With a lack of consideration that some words may be deeply offensive.
Years ago their was a major dust up over use of another offensive word for minorities. To the point that society discouraged it’s use in common conversation. Since that time the word in question (which much like the language of Mordor shall not be uttered here) has started to slowly faded from use.
However the use of the “R” word is still on going and it’s use is way more common than it should be. It cannot be stressed enough on how highly offensive this word is. Considering how many times it has been used at someone with a disability. In some respects it is even worse than using the “f bomb”.
In order for something to change we must first offer up a lesson that gives wisdom into how things are and why. The R word is one that has been used against those with disabilities for a very long time. One of the first insults people like us have to face. It is a shame and a disappointment that so many people find use of this word way too easy. Or worse still defend and justify it’s use. It is time for this word to fade from existence. Out of respect and consideration for those who face challenges most will never fully understand. -
