“Those with disabilities are a burden on society.”
This is such a chilling a statement that was recently seen from someone on social media. The kind of thing that gets attention. While some of the replies were shock and outrage. Many more were in support of the original poster. They were in agreement that those with disabilities have nothing to offer our society.
When you look at life though the lens of a disability. You soon realize that society has always been geared toward those who are able. That life is measured in how productive you can be. Such as being married. Having a lot of wealth. Along with all the rewards that such things can bring. In fact those with disabilities are often seen as less than valued because of this perceived notion that we cannot be productive. It is a stereotype that makes for a bad sitcom.
Many of us with disabilities have done a lot of great things in our lives. Some of them are even noted in the history books. We have figured out how to navigate the world in very creative ways. Making the most of our limitations while finding work around that help us live our lives. The world is for the able. Yet we have managed to find our own path forward. Even if some in society sees us as burdens.
One can argue that the world itself is a very difficult place to live in. Challenges await us on every front. Those with disabilities have a harder time due to society’s lack of understanding when it comes to our needs. Some do not even see us as worthy of living any kind of life. Even going so far as to suggest that those with disabilities suffer greatly despite the things that we have accomplished.
Those with disabilities offer much to society. Not always in measurable terms. Many of us bring joy and hope to those around them. Despite the issues that we may face. It is also a foolish notion that only those with disabilities face intense challenges on many levels. Truth is everyone has something they are dealing with. A challenge that is uphill for many to climb.
The fact that some consider those with disabilities a burden on society is troubling. It is a reflection of the current society’s desire to promote a throw away culture. Where life has no real meaning or dignity. What we need to do is promote a society that encourages life. That shows that no matter what you face you still have some kind of role to play. -
